What I Did this Summer

Well, I don't have a written down Bucket List, but there's a whole bunch of stuff in my head that I hope to do and experience before I die. I want to ride in a hot air balloon, travel to Amish Country, take my hubby to Four Corners, USA, see the Grand Canyon, eat super fudge chocolate cake and coconut cream pie until I pass out...stuff like that. This summer I was able to fulfil one of those wishes. Ziplining. It was pretty intimidating at first, signing a bunch of waivers, being harnessed up, safety lessons, and of course the sheer terror of jumping off a tall structure praying that a glorified clothes line will hold you up (at my size no less! - see the cake note above) .

Thankfully I have a friend who also had this desire, and we challenged each other to go through with it. We're both named Rhonda, maybe that accounts for our joint lack of good sense. Good for both of us that the first person in our group to fling themselves into the air was a 6 year old child--she was fearless! Us, not so much. ;-) But WE DID IT!

Gone Fishin'

I'm having so much fun photographing our "Gone Fishin'" Limited Edition event! I had a little guy this morning who just kept me laughing, I'd take a couple of photos, and then he would hop off to another spot. I finally decided he was a rabbit, but a sweet one.

I just competed the last of the requirements to earn my Photographic Craftsman degree from the Professional Photographers of America. Special thanks to the folks at the Professional Imaging Group of Eastern North Carolina who had me speak for them in New Bern a couple of weeks ago, earning me the final "merit" in my journey. Woo-hoo!

I'll officially gain my new title and more alphabet soup to go behind my name next Spring. If you're having trouble knowing what title to use for me, I'll happily answer to either "Majesty" or "Hey You!"

Nothing like a newborn baby to make you understand just how common miracles are. Little Gavin was so much fun to photograph, and this was hands down (some pun intended) my favorite image from the session. His mommy and daddy supplied the antique Coke box, and it was the perfect prop.

In case you don't already know, it does take a little fairy dust to get a pixie sized sleepy-head in this position for a photo. But not much. ;-)

And Baby Makes Three

Ok, you all know I love babies. The cutest thing other than a baby (or a mamma with a baby bump) is those itsy bitsy shoes. I don’t like to put them on the itsy bitsy feet, because those little toes are too cute to cover up, but I DO like the shoes. Cuteness!

This is one of my faves from a recent maternity session. Daddy loves sneakers, can ya tell?

Some Things Are Free

We hear it a lot, the old saying that goes "Nothing in Life is Free." I've said it plenty of times, haven't you? Well, I got reminded this weekend that sometimes that's not true.

I find myself doing a good bit of volunteer work with organizations that I believe in, and I'll be the first to say that some of it benefits my business. I'm not ashamed of that in the least, particularly since owning my business is what allows me the flexibility to volunteer as much as I do. But many of the things I give my time and energy to have nothing to do with bringing business in the door.

Every year I join a group of other volunteers and photograph "prom" pictures for a group of special needs folks at their annual "No Limits Formal Dance" in Winston-Salem. The attendees come from all over the triad, and they truly have a night to remember. I was told they had about 900 in attendance this year.

So on Friday night, we set up four photography stations, using volunteer photographers, assistants, and check-in staff. The equipment was donated for the night. Some wonderful folks worked for weeks making corsages and boutonnieres to give to the attendees. There were literally hundreds of neckties and bow ties available for the guys--again, free of charge. I don't even know all the other things that were donated to help make this a very special night.

What I do know is this, my co-volunteers and I did it for free. I had a great time, I enjoyed seeing everyone all dressed up and enjoying the evening, I got a lot of hugs and smiles, and I was reminded how blessed I am with my health. So maybe it wasn't free after all, looks like I got paid pretty well.

I introduced you to the youngest member of my family a few months ago, Baby Brooklyn. She's now six months old, and full of personality.

I photographed her for her "Baby Detail's" panel while we were in Virginia for the Easter holidays. We got some great shots while she showed off her wiggling skills, ha-ha. She's as sweet as she is cute, and those chunky little legs are just adorable! Do you see all that hair? At this rate she'll have braided pigtails for her one year portraits.

For this session I used my sisters french door as a soft box light, and used a large footstool that I covered with black fabric to put Brooklyn on. In case you're wondering, yes, most babies do leak when they're naked for more than two minutes. Yes, she was, and yes, she did. Nope, I put plastic down under the black fabric 'cause I knew that would happen and I didn't want my sister upset with me. ;-)

Wanna Pretend to be a Model?

Seems like I'm always getting some new idea that I want to try. Sometimes it's because I got inspired by a seminar or magazine article, or maybe I bought a new prop or backdrop, or sometimes it's just because I got some out-of-the-blue-hair-brained idea that I want to try. Or maybe I'm working on an idea for a painting or fine art photograph.

Now, I'm a portrait photographer all the way down into my heart. If I'm going to play with a new idea, it almost always involves having someone in the photograph.

So what do I do? Often I pull up my "Little Black Book" of people who are interested in being my models and call someone to offer a free session and a copy of my favorite image when we're done. Kinda like planning a play date. (By the way, that's also where I look first when a commercial client needs someone included in their shot with their product.)

Well--here's the problem. It's been two years since I updated my "Little Black Book" for models, and that's waaaay too long. I've got several ideas percolating, and it's just plain time to update things.

If you're interested, here's the plan. Tuesday, February 8th, 2011 from 10am to 5pm we're having an open casting call. No appointments, just pop in whenever you can. There will be a couple of forms to fill out and an model release to sign (must be 18 or signed by parent or legal guardian) and we'll do a quickie head shot for our book. That's all there is to it.

No need to dress up, no pressure. After you get called for a full-fledged session that's when we'll get all gussied up and stuff. Of course, there's no guarantee that you'll get a call to come, but if you don't get into the book it's a pretty sure bet you wont. If you REALLY want to be part of this, but you have to be outta town that day, call us and we'll fit you in some other time.

FYI: I might submit a favorite image to a background or prop manufacturer, and they could end up using it in their next catalogue or on their website. That would be super cool!

Models Needed for Projects I'm Working on Now:

Newborns 1-10 days old for new crochet snuggies, slings. (Expectant mom's can register their babies for our book with just a due date and a model release)

Babies 1-3 months old for new crochet baby hats and toboggans I'm making.

One through seven year old girls to show off our NEW COLLECTION of the cutest tutu's from Peach Tea Couture. They're adorable, and I have the entire collection, so I need a bunch of adorable girlies to come play dress up with me.

Families to pose for sample shots for marketing materials for our new division that offers Church Directory photography.

Princesses, fairies, or little boys who love frogs to be photographed in our castle arch outside. Our fab faux painter has painted us a wall to go behind the arch, and the vines are finally starting to grow up it a little, so it's ready!!!

High School Juniors from all the Triad High Schools: Trinity, Wheatmore, Randleman, Central High Point, East Davidson, Southwest Guilford etc. We're looking for Senior Spokesmodels for next years senior portraits. If you're part of the Class of 2012 and wanna earn some cash--we need to talk!

Teens with hip urban style, or toddlers with farm themed outfits for a new set we're getting ready to install. It's made of aged tin from an old barn roof. Rhonda risked life, limb, and husband to get that stuff, it's gonna be a really cool backdrop.

Expectant mom's with a sense of adventure. I wanna play with some ideas for maternity portraits that are different. ;-)

Pets of all kinds, housebroken, well loved. Working on a display and updating website photos.

Hats off to Plumbers!

The last 24 hours have renewed my respect for plumbers. Why, you ask? Well, I'll tell you.

We've noticed an odd smell in the water at the studio for a while now. It didn't smell bad all the time, but when it did the scent was getting stronger. Kinda a rotten egg smell mixed with home-perm ammonia. Sounds lovely doesn't it? Finally we figured out that it was somehow only associated with the hot water.

Yesterday our landlord's plumber came and got our problem fixed, yea! He was polite, thoughtful, explained things, did what he said he would do, and made it a pleasant experience all the way around. We're happy, yes, very happy.

But that's not the only reason I'm so filled with awe and respect for plumbers today. Nope, not at all. This morning I must have had an attack of stupidity, and took it upon myself to repair our leaky toilet at home. It started leaking last week, and we bought the parts, but my talented hubby has been working on other "Honey Do" projects and hadn't gotten to this one yet.

I was anxious to have it done, as I don't like either trekking to the other end of the house to use the guest bathroom or trying to remember to turn the water on and off for each flush. The kit came with instructions, and I figured it was probably a 15 minute job. Right? Wrong! I also figured my honey would be filled with awe when he found out what I had done. Ha, ha. Maybe, but only if I don't tell him the entire story.

My 15 minute project took an hour and a half. I won't bore you with all the details, but I will tell you that I have now had two bonus showers, and the bathroom walls are much cleaner than they were yesterday. So is the bottom of the towel cabinet over the toilet. FYI, if you've never tried this at home, you might be surprised to know that the water that fills a toilet in wintertime is very doggone cold.

I'm really happy to be at work now. I'm a pretty good photographer and artist, but it takes a special kind of talent to be a plumber. Keepin' my day job. Yep. Definitely!

Traditions--some like it wierd.

We have a fun, yet slightly odd, tradition in my family at Christmas. It's so much fun that people from outside of our family have taken time to join us on Christmas afternoon in order to participate. It costs nothing, yet everyone goes home with a gift.

What is this, you ask? Well....it's Yard Sale Christmas. The game is played a little like Dirty Santa with one major difference. You're not allowed to buy a gift. You must "go shopping" within your own house for some item you would put in a yard sale. Anything goes, and boy, do I mean anything.

Some real doozies that have never been forgotten include a lovely wagon wheel chandelier that came with my sisters new house. Oh, did I forget to mention that one of the rules is that you must remove your gift from the hostesses house upon your departure? Another memorable "gift" was a retainer, yep, the kind you wear on your teeth. It returned year after year wearing a new disguise each year. My personal favorite was the time someone painted it gold, and hung it from a red ribbon to create a unique tree ornament. ;-)

There was the box that contained tightly packed clothes from a recently cleaned out closet, and let's not forget the chalk parrot statue, that one made it back for several repeat performances.

Wonder what we'll have this year? Good times.

Christmas Shopping...fa,la,la,la,laaaa...HELP!

Do you feel the same way about gift shopping that I do? Of course I enjoy shopping, hey, I’m a girl, it’s part of my genetic makeup. And I certainly enjoy making the people I love feel special and valued. Spending money, that's a mixed emotions kinda thing for me. Enjoy the spending, hate the counting up the totals afterward, he-he-he.

But (you knew there was gonna be a “but” in there, didn’t you?) I face the same challenge every year, finding thoughtful gifts that the folks on my list will enjoy and appreciate. Some years I feel like I do pretty good, others leave me feeling less confident. The real winners are gifts that get used, talked about or enjoyed long after the Christmas season is over.

That’s one of the reasons we started offering Gift Certificates at Memory Lane Portraits. Everyone knows how precious a great portrait is. It’s a wonderful memory that starts with the session and lasts for a lifetime. (You know something is valuable if folks are still hanging on to it years later.)Every year we get calls from folks saying their mother told them all she really wanted this year was a great family portrait for her wall.

Fallin' in Love: Wedding Photos from the Mountains

This was a new twist on wedding day photography for me, and a LOT of fun! David and Kacey had a small chapel wedding in Blowing Rock, NC. Most of the time I'm hired to start photographing before the ceremony starts. This time was different, their chapel provided a photographer for the ceremony.

But this family ought to win a "Fan of the Year Award" because they wanted something more creative and fun to celebrate the day. I arrived at the end of their reception, and I'll admit that felt kinda odd, you know, like I was late. I had a bad dream one night kinda like that, but that's another story. Then we headed out for a real adventure as we spent a few hours be-bopping around and taking photos of them.

We found a beautiful abandoned barn, a little covered bridge, and lots of surrounding areas where the trees were just awesome. Beautiful people, beautiful place, beautiful day--can't ask for more than that. Well....a little warmer weather would have been lovely, but we managed.

Ok, I'm gonna sound like a grandma, but honest, I'm her auntie. Miss Brooklyn is just the cutest thing, don't you think? These are some quick photos taken at my brothers house a couple of weeks ago when I got to meet her for the first time.

It's been a while since we added a little girl to the family tree, that puts the count up to 7 nephews and 3 nieces (plus a goddaughter and two godsons, don't forget them.) Gonna be fun buying some little girl stuff for Christmas-woo-hoo!

Givin' Away Money - Wheeeee!

FREE MONEY--sort of. Tonight I'm thrilled and honored to help give away a total of $20,000 to a variety of charities who provide services in the fight against breast cancer.

My dear friend Karen started a non-profit organization called "Focused on a Cure" (yep, you guessed it, Karen is a photographer, hence the name) a couple of years ago and I've been able to contribute in a small way by helping to photograph their major fund raising event each year. It's always great fun, and raises a lot of money for the cause.

This year I was asked to serve on the committee that reviews the requests for funding by various organizations. What an eye-opener! I have never been involved in the world of non-profit grants, and it's much more involved than I imagined. Tough but rewarding, through this process the committee decided how to distribute the $20,000 that Focused on a Cure has raised. Tonight the recipients will gather for a small reception and receive their checks.

One thing I'm sure of, it's going to be a wonderful evening.

If you know a cancer survivor, or an active fighter...give him or her a hug. Special people, that's what they are, very special indeed.

Taste of the Town - Hospice Fundraiser

Headin' out to enjoy the Taste of the Town event at Showplace in High Point. Great food, huge silent auction (I've donated a $400 gift certificate) and beautiful surroundings. This is a wonderful fundraiser for Hospice, and they provide such a compassionate service to families in their greatest need. I'm honored to help them out!

Bestest Buddies

Every little boy needs a dog during his childhood, don't you think? It's the perfect friend, one who will love you, protect you, teach you how to stick your tongue out. Yep, the perfect friend.

If you've been around me much, you already know how much I love photographing babies. And you might know that as far as I'm concerned dogs are just children with four legs, and of course they are always welcome here at the studio. But even at that, I'll have to admit, when we got ready to for this part of the session, I wasn't sure how it was going to go.

You see, Cora's an active dog, and a big active dog at that. I had no idea how she was going to act when we put little Alfred up next to her. Well, she showed me a thing or two. She was amazing! Completely docile and sweet. What a great pup. Looks like the start of a great friendship.

Here's the second photo in our 3 part series of close ups of a magnolia. This is the stamen (I think that's the right term, if you're a botanist or just someone who knows, feel free to correct me.) Anyhow, it's the doohickey in the center of the flower. And yes, I'm pretty sure that's how you spell doohickey because believe it or not it was in my spell check. And yes, I'm aware that starting my sentences with phrases like "anyhow" and "and yes" is driving you English majors nuts. But honestly, it's how I talk, and this aint an essay so I'm gonna have fun with it. Try to pretend I'm speaking with bad grammar instead of writing with it, maybe that will ease the pain. ;-)

Back to my flower photo. Sorry for the rabbit trail. The centerpiece doohickey reminds me of wild mushrooms we used to gather in the woods when I was a kid. I'm guessing you can't eat the magnolias, but they sure are pretty and full of textures.

This is the third and last in the magnolia series. This petal had caught dozens of the little seeds in it's bowl, and it was just beautiful to me. I love the creamy softness of the petal against the rough but delicate texture of the seeds. I can imagine a summer storm coming through and either blowing them away or filling the petal with rainwater until they float and eventually weigh down the petal until they trickle to the ground.

My sisters and I were in Knoxville, Tennessee recently, and we found a great little place in the downtown area to have lunch. I knew it was going to be good when we walked in and the hostess had a basket of green beans she was stringing in between taking care of customers. Can't say I've ever seen that before, but it was very welcoming.

You know me, I just had to get a photo. She didn't want me to show her face, but was gracious enough to let me take this pic to share. Hello, Knoxville! You've got a great town there--wish we'd had more time.

Last weekends wedding was so much fun! It was a fairytale love story if ever there was one.

Ashley and Brandon literally grew up next door to each other, and have been sweethearts for years. When I was putting together their childhood memories slide show for the reception, there were lots of photos of the two of them together even as little kids. There were prom photos together, and even the two of them in their high school graduation cap and gowns together.

Thanks, Ashley and Brandon, for taking time to create something really special to remember your day. After the wedding, we went to the road where they grew up, and where their families still live. These photos were taken in a shed on her great grandpa's farm where they used to play when they were kids. I could have spent hours photographing on the farm, but I had a hunch Brandon wouldn't be as enthusiastic about that idea as I was. ;-)

What great stories they're going to have to tell their kids someday! Congratulations you two, and thanks for including me in such a special and utterly fun day.

Today would have been my Mamma's birthday. She was an amazing woman, and I was blessed beyond measure to have her to nurture my life.

Yesterday, I was talking to someone about the importance of having portraits taken of each of your children with each parent separately, because of the lasting value it has. I speak from experience, I have four siblings, and I'm so grateful I have beautiful portraits of Mom and myself taken by my friend and mentor Karen Goforth several years ago.

I almost didn't have these portraits made. I felt heavy (I was a lot heavier than I am now, in fact) and we were on vacation so it seemed like a lot of trouble. Boy, am I ever glad we took this time. These prints, and the others in that session are truly a treasure of great value to me now. I can enjoy our moments together again as I see these photos on my desk every day.

If I can share a gift with you, dear reader, as a token birthday present for my mom, it is the encouragement to take time to have portraits made with the people you love. See yourself through their eyes, not your own. You're a beautiful part of their lives!

Lilly's Pearls

This is a photo taken during a 4 generation session--4 beautiful women, 1 beautiful family. Lilly and Mom live in Chicago and came home to Thomasville to surprise Grandma and Great-Grandma for Mother's Day. While they were together was the perfect time to create a new family heirloom.

The pearls in the back belong to Great-Grandma, the baby bracelet is Lilly's, and the pearls in her hand are Grandma's but were worn during the session by Mommy. I can envision that someday she'll be photographed in her wedding gown with these same pearls.

Wow, what a difference a few days makes! These little baby robins were naked, ugly, and tiny just one week ago. (See the Photo of the Day for April 21st) and now they can barely fit in the nest and are beautiful with their feathers. I know it's not the best photo, but Mamma Robin hid her nest pretty well in the holly bush, and I'm not a big fan of pain.

My friend Brittany is going to the prom, and she going to be drop dead gorgeous in her fab-u-less jungle themed gown. Seriously, I know that sounds pretty far out there, but it looks great. (Of course, she's always gorgeous no matter what she wears.) These are the pumps that go with her dress--I think they're super cool!

I was photographing the Bartlett Pears in bloom at the Archdale Public Library (one of my favoritest places) and noticed this puddle of water in the parking lot with upside-down blossoms floating along like polka dots. It was much more inter sting than the other photos I had already taken.

Seeing these little wildflowers always take me back to my childhood. The dark purple variety grew in the field near the stream close to our house, and I would pick dozens of them to make a small boquet to give Mom. When I discovered clusters of these blooming in my back yard, I was thrilled. This one's for you Mom...wish you where here.

I found a robins nest in the shrubs in front of the studio today. Three little hatchlings, and one egg. They're really very ugly when they're this new--all bald and scrawny looking. So ugly they're kinda cute. Gala at Kyle Petty's Place

Well, I'm happy to report that the planning committee survived the Randolph County Partnership for Children's Second Annual Gala at the Kyle and Pattie Petty Farm on Saturday. Actually we more than survived--we thrived! Right up until we plopped into bed in the wee hours of Sunday morning and slept very, very soundly.

The tickets sold out, and between tickets and auction sales, we raised even more money than we had dared hope for, pretty cool, hun? What an amazing group of people gathered in one place! Just like having 250 of your closest friends come over for a hoedown. These folks really "got it" and made the night a resounding success. They were generous, patient, fun, and they looked sharp dressed up in their denim and diamonds. Plus, I think they had a pretty doggone good time, and even learned to do a little square dancin'.

The food was great (fried chicken and the best fried squash you ever tasted from Snyder Farms Catering), the music was awesome (Rocking Horse Band really does rock) and desserts were amazing. If you haven't had Chocolate Lava cake or Baileys Irish Creme cake from Homeland Bakery (http://www.homelandbakery.com/) your life just isn't complete yet. You better call Torri Nelson right away and fix that.

The party was a "Barnyard Dance" theme, and was held in the Petty's barn. Let me just tell you, I'm doubting you've ever seen a barn like this. At least I hadn't, and I grew up in the country. According to Kyle's son Austin, when his sister Montogomery Lee decided to have her wedding at the farm, they spent about a million dollars renovating the barn to host her reception. Of course that was before they added the "trophy room" (aka: museum) onto it. Let's just say it's nice, reeeall nice.

There was a fog on this morning, so I headed out early to see what Creekside Park had to offer before going to the networking event at the Chamber of Commerce. No luck at the park--the fog was burning off fast--but on the way back this field of straw beckoned me to pull over and photograph it.

Funny thing was that the Mayor was on her way to the Chamber event as well, and said she saw me. You never know who's watching!

Today was probably the most peaceful, beautiful Easter morning I can ever remember. I was on my families property in the mountains with camera in hand waiting for the sunrise, meditating, and remembering my Mom. I took a little hike in the woods, then on the road to get back to N.C.

My original plan was to be at Mom’s gravesite for sunrise, my plans got kinked up but it turned out I was exactly where I needed to be. Her favorite place was out on the farm with the mountains and all of nature surrounding her. If her spirit kissed the earth today, it would certainly have been at The Andy Place Farm, not the cemetery.

Gerbera daisies are so cheerful and vibrant. I really wanted to find a new angle to photograph them from, and this was my favorite image from the attempt. I liked the depth of looking into the petals from the side and it made a flower that is usually thought of as being flat faced have a lot more dimension.

I was driving back from a committee meeting in Asheboro, and thinking of what would make a great photo of the day for today when I saw a little dirt road I’d never been down. “Let’s see what’s down there,” I said. It was a beautiful farm that was a real step back in time. I thought a sepia tone image would give this photo just the right feel, like an antique print.

The formal banquet at PPNC was tonight. It’s the one time a year I get really dressed up in an evening gown and heels. After posing for a Board of Directors photo, I attended the dinner and then helped present the print awards to some very happy photographers. Before you ask, I didn’t have prints in the judging this year—just not enough time in the day to get everything done. Maybe I’ll send something to nationals??

This is a beautiful purple iris that was one of the flowers from our table’s centerpiece. Taken on our hotel bed, using the bedside lamp for light. I took several different photos, but the abstract feeling of this one won for Photo of the Day. You’ll probably see more photos of these flowers—I want to see how many different shots I can get before they fizzle out.

The back of the Sheraton Imperial hotel at night. I like the way the cool toned shadows of the trees make the section on the right look like it’s made out of marble. I thought about laying down on my back to show even more of the building, but honestly it was just too cold. Plus, a woman laying on the ground outside a hotel after dark just didn’t sound like a good idea. ;-)

Dear Reader, I know you probably think I've abandoned my Photo of the Day project, but it's not true. I've been photographing every day, but just too caught up in life and work to get them posted online. I'll try to catch up over the next few days.

There are several images I had ready to post, text and all, but the disk I had them saved on got "lost" on my desk. I found it this morning, (a good sign for the rest of the week being productive, don't you think?) so we'll get back on track. Now, let's think back to the end of Feburary, the week of our last snow for the season.....

The challenges of creating images while attending convention continue. After a very busy day of seminars, meetings, visits to the trade show, catching up with friends, working the registration desk, and exploring the print exhibit, it was nearly midnight before I got time to myself. This is a photo of the lights in the hallway of the hotel, underexposed about 2 stops for effect. I liked the pattern and the lines of the walls. Taken at 11:38 p. m.

I guess it's true that birds of a feather flock together. The first of my Photo of the Day collection taken from the Professional Photographers of North Carolina convention in Raleigh, and we had over 400 photographer "birds" at this year's event.

Every year there's a theme, this year it was Vegas. My roommate had a showgirl costume complete with feathered headdress, and while she was out of the room I snagged her feathers for this shot. I used the hotel room window to create a mirror image. I love the lines and color in this image—it would make a great fine art painting….hummmm.

I'll get there, really.

My husband Randy has a guitar collection. Don't bother asking me how many, I have no idea. I can't play them, but I can admire the craftsmanship. I can tell you they take up a lot more space than a thimble collection, or even a camera collection. ;-D They're also a lot prettier than thimbles or cameras. I'd say the odds are strong that you'll see more guitar photos as Photo's of the Day throughout the rest of this year.

This one was custom made for Don Ivey, our friend who used to own Ivey Music. It features abalone inlay and a quilted maple top.

When I stumble upon a scene like this, I wonder at the stories that are part of the creation of such a place. There must be hundreds of untold stories that either start or end here at this exact place. I find myself trying to imagine what this spot looked like 100 years ago, what it took to complete this unique and beautiful farm house, how many children and cats have played in these barns?

I'm guessing that this old farm has been around for decades, it certainly shows the signs that a family has loved and cared for it. Unfortunately, this is one of those times when a photo just doesn't do it justice.

I just have to share this little video. A few weeks ago I taught a class for the Professional Photographers of North Carolina about the use of fabrics in portraiture. These two beautiful young ladies, Brittany and Rachel, were our models for a little part of the day, and they were awesome! I photographed Brittany, the blonde, a while back for her senior portraits. With beautiful faces like these, how can you go wrong? My students were half from around Charlotte, and half from Virginia, and we had such a good time.I made some great new friends, and can't wait to see them at convention in a couple of weeks.

I had seen a row of hayrolls over the weekend, and went to photograph them today when I found a big green machine in the field. Love the rust, and the cheerful color. Sometimes I enjoy seeing the shadows more than the object. The clean lines of the siding on this building accent the natural flowing shapes of the branches and remind me that straight lines are seldom found in nature. The building is the Regan House in Archdale, NC. It's on the National Register of Historic Places, and currently serves as home to Ed Price Realty. Photographed shortly after daybreak.

February 8, 2010 - Photo of the Day - No, It's Not a Spaceship

Well...this is one of those days where the photo didn't come easily. I was on my way home from a seminar in Charlotte that lasted until 10:30 at night and still didn't have my photo. I decided I would drive into Thomasville and get a shot of "The Big Chair," but wouldn't you know it, there wasn't enough light on it to even try. So imagine this, I'm driving around town in the middle of the night, trying to keep one eye on the road and scan my surroundings for something cool to photograph with the other. I figure any minute a town cop is going to pull me over for being suspicious.

The iconic, world record breaking Big Chair in the center of town square wasn't lit, but this water tower was lit up like a Christmas tree just glowing in the sky. Anybody else see any humor in that?

I'm trying to think of some way to make the tower look cool, and decided that I needed to be underneath it. It reminded me of a spaceship at the time. However, looking at the finished image, it reminds me a lot of a jellyfish. Kinda funny, jellyfish live in water, and this tank is full of water. OK, it was funny in my head. In the end, this is a much more creative image than I would have gotten with the Big Chair.

This quilt was made by my Grandmother Trella as a wedding gift for me. As a young bride I was happy to receive it as a symbol of my new life as a married woman, but looking at it today I truly appreciate it. I have no idea how many hours she spent cutting, sewing, and hand quilting all those little pieces together to create something for me that is both beautiful and useful. It has outlived her, and I hope it will outlive me as well.

I saw this peaceful steeple from the top floor of Forsyth Hospital's parking deck. The "fog" was achieved by positioning myself over the hospital's ventilation system and being patient..no pun intended. The view 45 degrees to the left was of the skyscrapers downtown, Winston-Salem is a city of great contrasts.

I bought these baskets on my second mission trip to Honduras. They are hand crafted by a small tribe of Indians that lives in the mountains of Honduras, the Tolupans. They are very poor, and harvest grasses to craft these beautiful and sturdy baskets. Thought to have migrated to Honduras from the Sioux Indians in the southwest United States, their language is closely related to that of the Sioux. My friends, Clarence and Shirley, who were serving as full time missionaries in Honduras met these gentle people and bought the baskets knowing me and my little group were coming soon and would be pleased to have such unique souvineers. These are displayed behind glass doors in my living room.

MODERN ARCHITECTURE
OK, this is not the shot I had planned for today. I had planned to photograph this sparkling little shop that sells chandeliers this evening after dark when the crystal really shines. You know what they say about the best laid plans, when I got there they had huge "sample sale" signs in the windows and ruined my shot. I'll try again after the sale is over, LOL.

So I ended up riding around town looking for a new subject for my photo of the day---which was now my photo of the night. The nice police man that ended up following me around was probably wondering what on earth this crazy lady was doing circling this building several times. Well, sir, I was looking for just the right angle. The more I slow down and pay attention, the more I enjoy the beautiful architecture in downtown High Point. This building is particularly pretty at night.

Company's Coming

Couple of months ago the Central Guild Chairman for the Professional Photographers of North Carolina called and asked if I would be one of 3 studios in the area to participate in a special event for the Central Guild Seminar. He wanted me to host a tour of my studio, and be on a panel to speak at a round table discussion about "Being a Sucessful Studio" or something like that. First, I told him with the economy like it was last year I wasn't feeling particularly sucessful. But he wanted me anyhow.

The Central Seminar is in High Point this time (woo-hoo! I get to sleep in my own bed.) and we expected 10 or 15 people for the tour, 25 max. This was a pre-convention event for the folks who arrived a day early, and it hadn't been done before.

Boy were we wrong.

Can you imagine 64 photographers crammed into my studio? 64! You shoulda been there--oh wait, there wasn't room for you! It was unbelieveable! I was standing on furniture in the camera room to talk to the group, and it was standing room only. I wish I had been thinking clearly enough to take a picture.

The round table discussion at the restaurant was great, and we could have gone on for a lot longer had the restaurant not closed. There's one great side-effect of this, my office is now temporarily clean! Yea! Oh yes, and I get one step closer to having my Photographic Craftsman degree.

I'm off to classes today, and a Board Meeting this afternoon...I'm gonna be one tired puppy when this convention is over.
